2016 Scholarship in environmental studies - applications due by April 1, 2016

We are happy to present details of our 2016 scholarship:
  • Purpose of the Scholarship - The Friends of Euclid Creek (FOEC) seek applications from students planning to pursue degrees or certificates in environmental studies.
  • Awards - One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student to be used for educational purposes.
  • Criteria - We will evaluate applicants based on their potential to contribute to the field of environmental studies.
  • Eligibility - The applicant must not be a previous scholarship recipient and must be a high school senior or college student planning to pursue a degree or certificate in environmental studies. We prefer a student who attends or has attended a school located in Beachwood, Cleveland, Euclid, Highland Heights, Lyndhurst, Mayfield Heights, Richmond Heights, South Euclid, Willoughby Hills, or Mayfield Village - the cities in the Euclid Creek watershed.
  • Schedule - All application materials must be postmarked on or before April 1, 2016.

Annual Holiday Celebration

We invite you to join us for our annual Holiday Celebration. Our annual party includes live music, a catered dinner, good company, and an awards presentation. It promises to be an overall good time!

Location:  Mayfield Village Community Room
                 6621 Wilson Mills Road
                 (corner of Wilson Mills and S.O.M. Center Rd.)

Time:        Doors open at 6:30
                 Dinner at 7:00

Price:        $22.00 per person with advance reservation
                 $25.00 per person at the door

Please bring a dessert to share.

November - Tour of Nottingham Water Treatment Plant

Friends of Euclid Creek has a special evening planned for our next General Meeting. Please join us on a tour of the Nottingham Water Treatment Plant, one of Cleveland Water's four interconnected water treatment facilities. Because Euclid Creek borders this water treatment plant, it is an important feature in our watershed.

October Meeting on Ordinances, November Meeting

Please join us for the October monthly meeting on a special subject matter, Natural Landscaping   and Local Ordinances.

Natural landscapes sustain native pollinators, decrease storm water runoff and afford beauty to the beholder. But many municipalities have restrictive ordinances that curb native plantings. Naturalist, Barb Holtz will lead a discussion about weed ordinances and how you can help your city update their gardening regulations.

October Meeting

September Meeting
Join us for another outdoor walk at one of our preserved properties. Lynn Garrity, Coastal Program Specialist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and past Program Manager with the Cuyahoga River Community Planning Organization, will lead a hike through the Dusty Goldenrod Preserve in Highland Heights. Lynn, the former Euclid Creek Watershed Coordinator was instrumental in securing the conservation easement in preserving this special property. She will speak of her experience and the role land preservation serves in our local watersheds.

This will be a combined “social” with Friends of Euclid Creek and the Highland Heights Green Task Force.

We will walk around the property, so please wear appropriate shoes.

Our guest speaker for the evening will be
Chad Clink, The Holden Arboretum’s Community Forester

Join Chad to discuss urban and community forestry for Cleveland and the region. Trees across the landscape are assets to the community providing significant benefits. What can we do to coalesce grey and green infrastructure to obtain tree benefits like storm water reduction? Caring for trees is a start, but assessing the resource, engaging the community, and setting a standard for care are imperative!

Let’s take a snapshot of Euclid Creek starting in Acacia Reservation and ending at Wildwood Park, Euclid Creek Reservation, and see how the creek has changed since last year’s event.

Our Spring Celebration - April 24 - Don't Miss It!


Our Spring Celebration is being held at Dino’s, in the Acacia Metroparks Clubhouse on Friday, April 24, at 6:00 PM.  The event includes a reception, dinner, and talk by Chris Ronayne, Celebrity and Executive Director of University Circle, Inc. (UCI), entitled: “The Complete Neighborhood.”

Chris will share with us the elements of success at UCI and challenge us to be involved in creative planning for redevelopment of our urban communities.

Please join us for a stimulating talk, food and drink, and music by Jimmy Maguire, all the while enjoying a beautiful view at Acacia, the newest Metropark.
