Steering committee

The steering committee meeting took place at the SEL Library. Barb Holtz called the meeting to order around 7PM on September 19.

In attendance were Gary Bloom, Judy Dearden, Christi Carlson, Claire Posius, Barb Holtz, Carolyn Suguichi, Rick Evans, Jeanette Evans, Frank Skala, Fran Hogg, Ken M. Rapport, Lou Drassler, and Ginny Aveni.

October and November meetings

October 2 meeting topic is the SEL Library property with the SEL Library Director and Cuyahoga Co. Library marketing and building projects personnel
November 6 meeting topic is on plastics with Nancy Hughes

Updates from Claire Posius

October 26 is the Clean Ohio grant deadline with Claire proposing to work with Derek Shafer to include the Bishop Road and Richmond Heights properties
Saturday, October 20 is the tree planting event, 9am to 1pm, Richmond Heights City Hall, which is part of the Cuyahoga ReLeaf project

We voted unanimously to provide $3000 to cover the following costs -

$1200 for appraisal of the Bishop Road property (unless a developer buys the property based on the Highland Heights Planning and Zoning Committee meeting on Sep. 24)
$1200 for appraisal of the Richmond Heights property and $600 to cover a title search

Treasurer's report

Ken noted that he is working on the nonprofit status update with the state.

Greenwood Farm and Richmond Heights events

We discussed the Greenwood Farm event on September 22 and the October 20 tree planting event in Richmond Heights.

BVU, Great Lakes Conference, newsletter

Barb updated us on the BVU, Great Lakes Conference, and newsletter. The newsletter will include the holiday party information.

Strategic planning

We voted unanimously to proceed with Tom Romito. Ginny is to contact Tom to discuss his availability and Barb is to contact the steering committee about their availability.

Discussion

We discussed issues related to the SEL Library and Acacia Country Club.

Highland Heights land conservation - FOEC in partnership with the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District and West Creek Conservancy protected 12 acres of wooded land in the City of Highland Heights after CSWCD’s proposal was awarded funding from the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund. The land lies west of and adjacent to the Highland Heights Community Park and fronts on Bishop Road just south of Hawthorne Drive

Richmond Heights land conservation - FOEC with the help of Clean Ohio grant funding, the West Creek Conservancy, and our Watershed Coordinator, acquired the heavily wooded 8.7 acre Redstone Run property

* 2008-2011
Highland Heights land conservation - Purchased a conservation easement to preserve the multiple acre Highland Heights property that includes the dusty goldenrod identified as an endangered plant

Dam Removal - Euclid Creek East Branch Dam removal project in City of Euclid. Funding comes from a variety of sources including Ohio Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Fish Passage Program Grant, Water Resources Restoration Sponsorship Program

* 2007
Lower Euclid Creek Greenway Project - Identified restoration projects and greenway improvements for public access to creek in lower Euclid Creek segment. Funding came from ODNR-Coastal Management Assistance Grant.

Euclid Creek Watershed Signage - FOEC received grant funding to design and install signage raising community awareness throughout the watershed and created brochures about Euclid Creek. Funding came from the OEPA-Ohio Environmental Education Fund.

*2006
Rain Garden Implementation Project - Evaluated benefits and challenges of rain gardens in Euclid Creek and installed four demonstration gardens with educational signage in watershed communities. Funding came from the Ohio Lake Erie Commission and Lake Erie Protection Fund.
Wetland Inventory - identified and mapped priority wetlands in Cuyahoga County for conservation and restoration, completed in 2006. Funding came from the Great Lakes Commission.
Euclid Creek Watershed Guide (Cuyahoga County Planning Commission) - Overlay of Watershed Action Plan to develop greenspace priorities for recreation and conservation, completed in 2006. Funding came from ODNR-Coastal Management Assistance Grant.

* 2005
Euclid Creek Volunteer Monitoring Program - purchased equipment to start up volunteer monitoring program, completed in 2005. Funding came from OSU Extension Watershed Team & CREES Great Lakes Regional Water Quality Program.
Euclid Creek Maps - provided maps to communities and residents to educate about watershed, completed in 2005. Funding came from Legacy Village Change for Charity Foundation.

* 2004
Headwater Stream Evaluation - Cleveland Metroparks performed HHEI on 100 segments of headwater streams in Euclid Creek to help in prioritizing restoration and protection strategies.

* Ongoing
Riparian and Wetland Setback Ordinances - Encouraging communities to adopt an NOACA model ordinance to protect riparian and wetland areas and provide technical reviews of any ordinance modified (City of Euclid and City of Richmond Heights passed the ordinance).

Funding comes from a variety of sources including Ohio Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Fish Passage Program Grant, Water Resources Restoration Sponsorship Program
